Remember when Supreme Court Justices used to stay out of politics and focus on the Constitution? That was nice.
According to this, 83-year-old liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been busying herself by criticizing presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump.
During a recent interview with the New York Times, Ginsburg vowed to move to New Zealand if he becomes president.
“I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president,” Ginsburg said. “For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.”
I know. Appointing conservative justices who would actually uphold the Constitution and keep their whiny political opinions to themselves? THE HORROR.
Needless to say, her comments have baffled the legal community.
Her comments about Trump stunned members of the legal community and campaign watchers, who believed her remarks were unprecedented and said they underscore the need for Supreme Court justices to keep their political opinions to themselves.
‘I find it baffling actually that she says these things,’ said Arthur Hellman, a University of Pittsburgh law professor, in an interview with the Washington Post. ‘She must know that she shouldn’t be. However tempted she might be, she shouldn’t be doing it.’
Legal experts now say Ginsburg is dragging the entire Court into the political arena. What if the Supreme Court hears a case involving or relating to Trump? Would we not have good reason to question Ginsburg’s impartiality?
“I think this is ultimately a question for judicial ethicists, but I do think following these comments it is a legitimate question to raise, should Donald Trump’s campaign come to the Court with any legal questions before the election,” University of California’s law and political science professor Rick Hasen wrote. “Heaven help us if we get a Clinton v. Trump case to the Supreme Court, wholly apart from this new controversy.”
Add that to the ongoing list of reasons we MUST keep Hilary Clinton out of the White House. She’ll only appoint more Ginsburgs.
