Gee – you’d think the President of the United States of America didn’t really care about new American citizens actually becoming, you know, AMERICANS.
According to this, legal immigrants who become American citizens through the Naturalization process no longer have to include the phrase “bear arms on behalf of the United States,” which up until Obama got his executive order pen going, was a key component of the Oath of Allegiance that newly minted American citizens take upon becoming naturalized. They don’t even have to cite religious reasons or whatever for not wanting to take that as part of their oath. Just – Obama said they didn’t have to. And nobody noticed the change –
The pledge to help defend America was good enough for the 6.6 million immigrants naturalized since 2005 and good enough for the over 15 million naturalized since 1980, but Obama’s appointees at the USCIS think that is too much to ask of the 18.7 million estimated legal immigrants eligible today for eventual naturalization or the 750,000 who will be naturalized in the coming year.
This radical change was announced a year ago, in July of 2015. Congress did not enact the change in new legislation. There was no congressional debate, no filibuster in the US Senate, and no sit-in in the House to demand that a bill to repeal the USCIS action be brought to a vote.
No, this radical change was implemented while Congress slept. Like other Obama actions to undermine our immigration laws, the Republican-controlled Congress has not used its constitutional powers to reverse the administrative action.
Here’s the stupid thing: Legal immigrants have been taking the Oath of Allegiance for well over 30 years. Why change it now? Because we’re all supposed to be “Global Citizens,” now. National sovereignty and national allegiance isn’t supposed to mean anything. America isn’t any more exceptional than Mexico or France or Japan or Syria. The fact that our nation paved the way for the ideas of freedom and liberty and equality before the law? Nah – doesn’t matter. We should all just keep to ourselves and focus on our differences, rather than become Americans and be loyal to this country. And that – more often than not – goes double for legal immigrants, who had the decency and moral judgement to admit right out that they WANT to be American citizens and do things the right way.
It’s politically incorrect these days to even believe in American exceptionalism (what are you – raaaaaacist?). It’s not OK anymore to say that America is a melting pot, because people need to be able to celebrate their own special cultures and not that of simply being an AMERICAN, and therefore we should all be separated and segregated and whatnot (isn’t that what America is supposed to….oh wait….). It’s not OK to tell folks that if you come to this country, you better be prepared to freaking MELT.
It would be one thing if this was a few new citizens who didn’t want to take that part of the Oath for religious reasons or what-have-you – that could be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. But to have the FREAKING PRESIDENT of our country tell every new citizen “Nah, that part’s totally optional,” well then there is a much bigger problem than worrying about not hurting legal immigrants’ feelings. In fact, knowing some of the people I do who came here from other countries and became citizens, they would be offended at the suggestion that they can’t handle something that America is requiring them to do. They WANT to be loyal to America. Even if they aren’t actually asked to raise up and bear arms in America’s defense, it’s the principle of letting them know “Hey, this is a thing that could happen.” It’s part of leaving behind old allegiances and starting over new – not separating yourself from your American neighbors.
Shows the value Obama places on being an American citizen, doesn’t it? Which is, not that much.
