One of my favorite things about the impending Trump Administration is how they seem to be working to undo all the crap that Barack Obama did over the past eight years. Granted, that’s a lot of crap to go through and it’s going to take some time. But I appreciate the start they’ve made. Especially since Obama’s entire presidency was about making sure he had a glorious historical legacy for everyone to fawn over.
As far as I’m concerned, Obama’s legacy is President Donald Trump. And it’s no less than Obama deserves.
Now, this particular legacy-wrecking move by Trump might seem small, but the message that it sends has no less impact, given the controversy it originally caused.
According to this, Donald Trump has been reported to have personally asked Great Britain for the bust of Winston Churchill back –
President-elect Donald Trump has specifically asked England if they will return a bust of Winston Churchill to the Oval Office after President Barack Obama had it removed in 2009.
According to British newspaper The Sun, Trump senior advisers Jared Kushner and Steven Bannon asked Britain Foreign Minister Boris Johnson during their meeting in New York City over the weekend if England would be so kind as to return the bust.
A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Theresa May told the Sun that May was more than willing to oblige: “The Prime Minister is happy to loan the Churchill bust to the White House and will be delighted to view it on display when she visits this Spring.”
You remember that bust, right? It was a gift from Britain to the United States in 2001 and sat in the Oval Office for the remainder of George W. Bush’s presidency. It was meant as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
Soon after taking office, however, Obama gave it back and replaced it with a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. Now, there’s nothing wrong with MLK (I happen to admire the man greatly), but why send Winston Churchill back? They’re both great figures in history and there’s certainly room for both to have places of honor in the Oval Office. Well, there are a few explanations –
Some speculate, including conservative documentary filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, that Obama removed the bust because he has a hatred of American and British imperialism, which dominated the world in the early 20th century. [British Foreign Minister Boris] Johnson has made similar accusations, even going so far as to say that Obama had the bust removed because of his “ancestral dislike of the British Empire.”
Well, it’s as good an explanation as any. Patently stupid, if that was Obama’s motivation. But it makes sense. In a depressing way.
Regardless, Trump has asked for the bust back and it looks like Britain is happy to oblige. Isn’t it great to finally have a president who has respect for our allies?
